Language, Language, Language!

2015-11-08

I know everyone must be curious about my language skills by now…

The languages I am fluent in are English and French. I went to a francophone primary and elementary school studying every subject in French. I continued on to high school graduating with a french scholarship, among other scholarships. I completed 3 years of university Chemistry at UNBC in English.

I wrote in chinese today, YAY! This may not the best, but it's a start!

This is a picture of me with my name and wishes of good health in chinese to the nursing home as part of a gift.

Terrace has a very small Chinese community. I grew up with my mother speaking to me mainly in Shanghainese and in Mandarin. My mother started learning Cantonese 10 years ago. I understand Shanghainese from my childhood, and I understand a fair amount of Cantonese and Mandarin. This pageant has made me grow so much! I barely ever spoke a word of Chinese before this incredible experience! I can now communicate to my new pageant friends with phrases I’ve learned in Cantonese and in Mandarin.

This is a photo of Terrace, B.C. taken by my good friend Ezra. He really captures the best of Terrace (I will post more later for viewing!).

This experience has been very eye-opening to me. I now feel as though I know what it is like to be a foreigner. As a student and especially as a former resident assistant at my university, I always wondered about how exchange students felt at my university. It was my duty to help others find their way around the campus and to direct fellow students to where they needed to be. I also organized many community building events to bring residents closer together as well as events that embrace multiculturalism.

This is a photo of UNBC, I love the beautiful campus! So many memories heart
